Mexican guacamole

Guacamole is an avocado-based sauce native to Mexico. The basic guacamole is traditionally made from ripe avocados mashed in a mortar with sea salt, but some recipes also include other ingredients such as tomato, onion, garlic, lemon juice, chili, and other additional seasonings (such as sour cream). In Mexico, guacamole tends to be spicy and it is typically used to accompany tacosnachos and other meaty dishes.

This is an easy recipe to prepare spicy guacamole:

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lime/lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp-¼ cup finely chopped red/green onion
  • 2 tbsp cilantro, finely chopped
  • ½-2 serrano chiles (to taste), stemmed, seeded and chopped
  • 1 small pinch freshly grated black pepper
  • ½ ripe tomato, seeded and pulp removed, diced


  1. Remove the pits.
  2. Scoop out the avocado flesh with the aid of a spoon and put it into a bowl.
  3. Lightly mash the avocado flesh with a fork.
  4. Sprinkle with salt and pour the lime or lemon juice. Mix well.
  5. Finely chop the onion and cilantro.
  6. Cut the avocados in half.
  7. Remove the stem and seeds from the chiles and chop them.
  8. Add the onion, cilantro, chiles and grated black pepper to the avocado paste.
  9. Cover with plastic wrap (directly on the surface) to prevent oxidation of the guacamole.
  10. Refrigerate.
  11. If you are going to add tomatoes to your guacamole, dice them and pour them into the mixture just before serving, as the sauce will be tastier.
  12. Serve into a bowl.
